The second piece in The Twelve days of Christmas series is the Woman holding the two turtle doves. Based on this much loved and favorite Christmas carol by the same name, the written lyrics date from 1780 England although the tune goes back much further and is of French origin. Many people believe the song actually has its roots in the 1500’s and was part of a catechism lesson. Each Gift had a reference to their faith and teaching. Two turtle doves refers to the Old and New Testaments. It was also described as a memory game for children to play at home. A leader would recite the first verse and another child would do the next and so on until someone missed a verse and had to pay a penalty. Our beautifully dressed woman with the turtle doves is a perfect addition to this series. She is dressed in her most beautiful finery for her “true love”.

During the 18th century in London, a Master Sweep would employ small boys as Chimney Sweeps, as young as age seven, to climb inside the flues and brush them clean. In central and Eastern Europe and most particularly in Germany where he was called a Schornsteinfeger or Schlotfeger, meeting a chimney sweep on New Years meant good luck for the year especially if he were to give you his card. Chimney sweeps were typically children as young as seven and were often orphans throughout the mid to late nineteenth century in Europe. A chimney sweeps image, often a blond child, sprinkling mushrooms and four leaf clovers for lucky recipients was often used on chocolates as well as silver charms. These sooty harbingers of good luck are especially rare to find since the invention of modern heating systems and therefore our Chimney sweep will be a lucky edition to you holiday home.

To mark the 30th Anniversary of Byers’ Choice, Carolers from the past 30 years are being reintroduced in 2008; the Byers Choice “ Sandwich Board Man” is one of these Carolers. A sandwich board is two large boards bearing advertising, hinged at the top by straps for hanging over the shoulders with one board in front and the other behind. The Byers’ Choice “ Sandwich Board Man” is advertising that favorite Christmas tradition, Christmas crackers.

The "Ghost of Christmas Present" was the second of the three spirits (after the visitation by Jacob Marley) that haunted the miser Ebenezer Scrooge , in order to prompt him to repent. It transported him around the city, showing him scenes of festivity and also deprivation that were happening as they watched. Among those they visited were Scrooge's nephew, and the family of his clerk, Bob Cratchit.

The Byers’ Byers “ Woman Selling Stuffed Animals” is the 2008 Cries of London series Caroler. In keeping with the theme of the Cries of London Carolers which portrays vendors of the Victorian days peddling their wares, this year’s vendor is selling the ever popular stuffed teddy bears. She is wearing a brown skirt with a burgundy/gold/green plaid apron covering it. Her black jacket is accented with a light plaid scarf fastened with green ivy. To top off her outfit, she is wearing a brown felt bonnet trimmed in light amber fur. She has light brown pouch to carry her treasure trove of teddy bears, and it one arm she has a large bear for a special child.
Speaking of children, be sure to view the “ Boy with Stuffed Animal” and “ Girl with Stuffed Animal ” right, they all make a great set!

To mark the 30th Anniversary of Byers’ Choice, Carolers from the past 30 years are being reintroduced in 2008; the Byers Choice “ Pastor” is one of these Carolers. He is outfitted in back velvet from head to toe including his back flocked coat. Around his neck is the traditional white collar that marks him as a man of the cloth. The “ Pastor” is holding in his arms a wooden nativity set that includes, Mary, Joseph and Baby Jesus accompanied by a lamb and tree. He has salt and pepper hair topped with a black brimmed hat and is wearing gold spectacles.
